Religion of the New England Colonies
Massachusetts
In England, the Puritans were a religious group. They came to America so they could practice their religion as they pleased. However, they did not allow other settlers the same religious freedom. Settlers who did not follow the Puritan ways were not allowed to own land in the colony, and were often sent away. The Puritans wanted to make the Church of England more "pure." They wanted to remove the ceremony and music.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams, who was a protestant. He created Rhode Island to be a safe haven to religious minorities. In his view, the government shouldn't force people to worship a certain way. This led Williams to establish Rhode Island, the first place in America where persons of all faiths could worship and practice as they wished.
New Hampshire
The religion was puritan. There was no religion freedom or tolerance.
Connetcicut
The colonists who settled were seeking more religious freedom but were still strict and intolerant of other religious beliefs.
